TEW Galleries is pleased to present an exhibition of recent mixed media paintings by Laura Duerwald.
Laura Duerwald is inspired by patterns and rhythm she finds in nature. In her paintings, these references appear as fragments that embody the landscape without depicting it. Her art is also about building and compressing a history into a surface. At each stage of the creative process, she embraces happenstance and imperfection by letting the paper, pigment, linen, and eco-printed fabric she uses, interact in unpredictable ways to create their own possibilities. These interactions can take on the appearance of antique manuscripts, or the shifting patterns of cast shadow on a subtly textured surface. A final coat of wax is often added to give a painting the appearance of being encased, as if in amber. As she makes decisions about how a work is to proceed, Duerwald’s objective is to map the experience of attentiveness and what it means to be still. The aim of creating subtle objects that that encourage meditative connections and resonate with potential meaning simultaneously becomes an exploration of the artist’s inner being and an intersection with the viewers sensibilities.
