New Sculpture: Richard Downs

PRESS RELEASE

California sculptor Richard Downs began his career as an illustrator and boasts work for numerous big-name magazines. Downs still creates works on paper, although nowadays as a full time artist. His main focus over the past six years or so has become sculpture, which will be the focus of his show at TEW.

Downs, like Keiger, brings a very particular viewpoint to his work. His sculpture is both bold and playful and he uses different materials (braided wire, wood, metal) and abstracted shapes, sometimes augmented with color, to create powerful figure based works in which both positive and negative shapes (surface and void) work in tandem.
